5 Crucial Facts About A Fire Extinguisher Refill

If you own a business, you know the Ontario fire code requires that businesses have working fire extinguishers on site at all times. At Tesla Fire Systems, our many services include providing fire extinguisher inspections as well a fire extinguisher refill. If you are unfamiliar with the refill process, here are a few facts that you need to know.

1. Yearly Inspections Are Required

A fire extinguisher refill may not be needed every year, but fire extinguisher inspections are required by law. Failure to comply with the Ontario Fire Code can result in costly fines, not to mention that your business may not be as safe as possible.

2. Remember The 6-Year Rule

Typically, most fire extinguishers will need to be recharged, or refilled, every six years. Even if you haven’t used your extinguishers, they will need to be refilled and recharged after this six-year period. If you have used an extinguisher it needs to be refilled immediately, and it is best to hire a professional for this service to ensure that it has been refilled correctly.

3. Check Your Pressure Gauge

If you aren’t sure if a fire extinguisher is in good working order, you can check easily. There should be a gauge at the top of the extinguisher and often there will be a green section and a red section. If the yellow gauge is within the green section, your extinguisher is fine, but if it is in the red “Recharge” or “Overcharged” sections, it needs to be serviced. We recommend that you check all of your extinguishers once per month, and if you have a fire extinguisher without a pressure gauge, replace this unit with one that does so that it can be checked easily.

4. Hire A Professional

Many people consider refilling extinguishers on their own, but it’s always best to have a professional complete this task. We guarantee every refill that we do, so you will have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that all of your extinguishers are in perfect working order. We are an ESA/ACP contractor with more than 50 years of experience, and are committed to providing quality work and 100% customer satisfaction.

5. Training Is Essential

While yearly inspections and an occasional recharge or fire extinguisher refill are essential, all of this fire protection is useless if you (and your staff) don’t know how to use the extinguishers. Fire safety training is crucial. Your staff should be aware of the locations of all fire extinguishers and how to use them. Teach them the PASS acronym:
P – Pull the pin in the handle; A – Aim the nozzle toward the base of a fire; S –Squeeze the lever slowly; and S – Sweep the extinguisher from side to side.

For homeowners, we also recommend that you inspect the gauges on your fire extinguishers every month and if you use your fire extinguisher, even if you use just a little bit of foam, it needs to be recharged and refilled. Commercial fire extinguishers are more costly in general, so for businesses, a fire extinguisher refill makes good fiscal sense, but it can be less expensive for homeowners to simply replace their small extinguishers after use.

We can provide a fire extinguisher refill, extinguisher inspections and we have any type of extinguisher you might need, for both homeowners and all types of business owners.
